In Pursuit of the Silver Darlings

In pursuit of the Silver Darlings: the history of the herring industry and evolution of the sailing herring lugger is brought to present day with the restoration of the luggers, Clan Gordon 1911 and St. Vincent 1910."

In the late 1800s the Scottish herring fishery was the largest in the world. Fortunes were made in pursuit of the Silver Darlings. Billions of fish were caught using highly evolved sailing boats. Clan Gordon and St. Vincent, built within a year of each other are two lucky survivors, representing two very different design pathways.

By the end of last century the herring was commercially extinct in these waters, but rarer still are the luggers that caught them. The talk will focus on the rebirth of two lucky boats, brought back from the brink.

There will be time for Q&A and the event is followed by a performance by Ruaridh Maclean from 9 PM on Shore Quay.

This is a collaboration event between Ulluminate and Lugger Fest
